Jensen Ackles smiling at a public appearance, known for his role as Dean Winchester in Supernatural
Jensen Ackles has built a career spanning soaps, horror films, and superhero TV — from Dean Winchester to Soldier Boy.

Jensen Ackles has one of the most durable résumés in modern television. Millions know him as Dean Winchester from The CW’s Supernatural. But his career spans daytime soaps, teen dramas, horror films, superhero streaming hits, and even a brewery. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 1, 1978. His father, Alan Roger Ackles, worked as an actor and voice artist, giving Jensen an early window into the industry.

This article traces his path from child model to The Boys, plus the music, production, and business ventures that round out his career.

Early Life and Family

Jensen Ackles grew up mainly in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. He’s the middle child of three, with an older brother, Joshua, and a younger sister, Mackenzie. His family had entertainment ties early on. Jensen started modeling around age four. He appeared in print and TV ads for Walmart, Nabisco, and RadioShack throughout his childhood.

Acting wasn’t his first plan, though. He originally wanted to study sports medicine at Texas Tech University and become a physical therapist. That changed when he decided to pursue acting seriously. In 1996, he moved from Richardson, Texas, to Los Angeles to chase it full-time.

Breaking Into Daytime TV

Ackles landed small television roles first, appearing on shows like Wishbone and Sweet Valley High in the late 1990s. His real breakout came in 1997, when he joined NBC’s Days of Our Lives as Eric Brady. The role launched his career fast. He won the 1998 Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Male Newcomer, and the part earned him three consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series.

Ackles left the soap in 2000. He’d grown frustrated with his character’s storylines, and he wanted to chase primetime work through a development deal with ABC.

The Teen Drama and Genre TV Years

After Days, Ackles moved through several defining early-2000s shows. He appeared in the miniseries Blonde, based on Marilyn Monroe’s life, and auditioned for young Clark Kent on Smallville — a role that went to Tom Welling instead. He found more traction on Fox’s Dark Angel, created by James Cameron, also he first played the villain Ben/X5-493 in 2001, brother to protagonist Max (Jessica Alba). His character died in that episode, but producers brought Ackles back for season two as Ben’s stable-minded clone, Alec/X5-494. He stayed until the show’s 2002 cancellation.

In 2003, Ackles joined The WB’s Dawson’s Creek for its final season as C.J., a love interest for Jen Lindley. That same year, he filmed the Fox series Still Life, which never aired. He returned to Vancouver in 2004 to join Smallville as assistant football coach Jason Teague, Lana Lang’s new love interest.

One near-miss stands out from this era. Producers wanted Ackles for a love-interest role on Tru Calling, but he turned it down. They liked his first name enough to rename the role — eventually played by Eric Christian Olsen — “Jensen” anyway.

Devour and the Road to Supernatural

In 2005, Ackles took the lead in the horror film Devour, playing Jake Gray. His real father, Alan Ackles, played Jake’s father in the film — one of the few times the two worked together on screen. Critics gave Devour a mixed reception, but the timing mattered more than the reviews.

That same year, producers cast Ackles as Dean Winchester in a new horror-action series: Supernatural. He’d actually auditioned for Sam Winchester first. Instead, he landed the role of Sam’s older brother, opposite fellow Texan Jared Padalecki. The show followed the Winchester brothers as they hunted demons and monsters across America, often searching for their father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The Supernatural Years: Fifteen Seasons, One Legacy

Supernatural defined the next fifteen years of Ackles’ career. The show nearly got cancelled after season two, but it built a fiercely loyal fan base that carried it to 327 episodes — making it the longest-running live-action sci-fi/fantasy series in North American TV history when it ended in 2020.

Stepping Behind the Camera

Ackles didn’t just act on Supernatural — he directed too. He helmed “Weekend at Bobby’s” (season six), “The Girl Next Door” (season seven), “Heartache” (season eight), “Soul Survivor” (season ten), “The Bad Seed” (season eleven), and “Atomic Monsters” (season fifteen). His parents even made a rare cameo in the season-eight episode he directed, with his father Alan taking a small speaking role.

Film and Stage Work During Hiatuses

Ackles kept busy between seasons. He filmed the indie comedy-drama Ten Inch Hero during the first hiatus, playing Priestly and earning strong reviews for his comedic timing. He made his professional stage debut too, starring as Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee in Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men alongside Lou Diamond Phillips at Fort Worth’s Casa Mañana Theatre in June 2007.

In 2008, he landed the lead in My Bloody Valentine 3D, a remake of the 1981 slasher classic. The film hit theaters in January 2009 and became a box-office success — still one of his best-known movie credits.

Building a Voice-Acting Career

Ackles built a strong side career in animation. He voiced Jason Todd/Red Hood in Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) — a role popular enough that Supernatural later used a Red Hood costume as an in-joke prop. He went on to voice Bruce Wayne/Batman in later DC projects, including Batman: The Long Halloween and Justice League: Warworld, and voiced Kyle Madigan in the 2010 video game The 3rd Birthday.

Music and Side Projects

Ackles also sings and plays guitar. He’s contributed backing vocals and co-writing credits to several albums by musician Steve Carlson, including Rollin’ On (2003), Spot in the Corner (2003), Stripped Down (2008), and Different Town (2012). He also sang and played guitar on a track from the 2012 covers album Sharing the Covers.

He holds a Universal Life Church ordination, too, also he used it to officiate the 2019 wedding of Supernatural co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan and actress Hilarie Burton.

Life After Supernatural

Supernatural ended in 2020, but Ackles didn’t leave the Winchester universe behind entirely. He and his wife, actress Danneel Ackles, formed Chaos Machine Productions that same year under a deal with Warner Bros. Television. Their first major project, The Winchesters, followed Sam and Dean’s parents for The CW. Ackles served as executive producer and narrator, voicing Dean once again. The show got picked up in 2022 but was cancelled after one season.

In October 2021, Ackles joined the Western film Rust, playing U.S. Marshal Wood Helm opposite Alec Baldwin. Production stopped after the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set, and Ackles left the project.

The Boys and What’s Next

Ackles’ biggest post-Supernatural role has been Soldier Boy in Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, which he joined in 2022. The corrupted, patriotic supersoldier introduced Ackles to a new generation of fans. He later reprised the character in the spin-off Gen V and will return again in the upcoming prequel series Vought Rising, alongside Aya Cash. He’s also picked up recent guest spots, including a Supernatural-referencing episode of CBS’s Tracker.

Business Ventures and Personal Life

Ackles co-owns Family Business Beer Company, a brewery in Dripping Springs, Texas, alongside his wife and in-laws. The name nods to Supernatural’s recurring tagline, “family business.”

He married actress Danneel Harris in 2010. The couple has three children, including daughter Justice Jay (“JJ”), born in 2013, and twins born in 2016. Their Austin home has even been featured in Architectural Digest.

Ackles has stepped into civic life too. In 2018, he joined Supernatural co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins in publicly backing Beto O’Rourke’s Texas Senate campaign. In 2019, New Orleans’ Krewe of Bacchus named him King Bacchus LI for its annual Mardi Gras parade.

Conclusion

Jensen Ackles’ career stands out for its longevity and range. He went from child modeling and a Daytime Emmy-nominated soap role, through the horror and teen-drama circuit of the early 2000s, to fifteen seasons anchoring a fan-beloved cult classic. Now he’s building a second act in The Boys universe. With Vought Rising on the way and Chaos Machine Productions developing new projects, his career isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
